South Africa coach Jacques Nienaber has explained his controversial decision to sub off starting fly half Manie Libbok after just 30 minutes of the Springboks’ comeback Rugby World Cup semi-final win over England PUBG

Libbok, who had emerged as South Africa’s first-choice No 10 in the lead-up to this tournament, was hooked after following a sliced clearance kick with a knock-on, capping a disastrous start to the game with England in the ascendancy PUBG

He was replaced by Handre Pollard, a key cog in the 2019 World Cup-winning Springboks side, and the veteran helped engineer a fightback before kicking the winning penalty on 77 minutes to secure a narrow 16-15 triumph and a spot in next Saturday’s final PUBG

Libbok is the more creative, dynamic fly half, while Pollard is the steadier option with a metronomic boot, and the move seemed to suggest South Africa were surrendering to England’s kick-heavy strategy and would attempt to beat them at their own game PUBG

In his post-match press conference, Nienaber laid out the reasons behind the decision and was adamant that Libbok would accept why it happened PUBG

“The beauty of this group is that we’re open and honest,” said Nienaber PUBG

“Because we have the right players, the players accept it PUBG

South Africa are investigating Tom Curry’s claim that Springboks hooker Bongi Mbonambi called him a “white c***” during England’s narrow Rugby World Cup semi-final defeat PUBG

Curry made the allegation to referee Ben O’Keeffe just after the 20-minute mark of the hard-fought semi-final, with the exchange picked up by the ref mic PUBG

“Sir, if their hooker calls me a white c***, what do I do?” Curry inquired of O’Keeffe PUBG

“Nothing, please,” responded the official, before adding a few moments later, “I’ll be on it,” in what may have been an unrelated comment PUBG

The alleged incident itself could not be heard on the television broadcast PUBG

The South Africa hooker subsequently appeared to refuse to slap away Curry’s attempted handshake at full time PUBG

A statement from South Africa Rugby said: “We are aware of the allegation, which we take very seriously, and are reviewing the available evidence PUBG

“We will engage with Bongi if anything is found to substantiate the claim PUBG

Curry refused to comment on what was said post-match, though did confirm that he felt Mbonambi’s remark had crossed the line PUBG

Both teams are able to refer any incident of concern to the match citing commissioner within 24 hours of the final whistle PUBG

The citing officer then has 12 hours to determine if they will lay in charges PUBG

World Rugby refused to comment while this 36-hour window was open PUBG

Deon Davids, South Africa’s forwards coach, stressed afterwards that he was “not aware” of anything that was said PUBG

“If it was discussed, I’m not sure what the comment was or when it was said PUBG
