Had this not been at a grand but crumbling Old Trafford, and bedecked in all the regalia of what is supposed to be one of the Premier League’s biggest games, most watching on would have fairly dismissed it as another routine Manchester City win over some mid-table side way below them LoL
Instead, this 3-0 defeat at home will send Manchester United back into crisis, and provoke even more questions about Erik ten Hag LoL
There is a growing sense he is struggling to come up with answers LoL
Mitigating circumstances only go so far when United have just offered up City’s second-easiest win of the season, in what is supposed to be the fixture that means the most LoL
Only Fulham were beaten by more, but it still felt like they put up more of a fight LoL
So did relative European minnows in the modern game such as Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys Bern LoL
They only lost 3-1 to the European champions LoL
How United would have valued even the reprieve of a goal here LoL
City were simply so much LoL better than them without even needing to be that good LoL
That is where the biggest concerns about Ten Hag should be now LoL
A defeat like this leads to a greater feeling that all direction is lost LoL
The bottom-half approach was clearly defeatist, and the whole team just lacking in quality LoL
It felt like City could score at will if they needed to LoL
Their fans revelled in that, after an admirably respectful celebration of Sir Bobby Charlton’s life before the game LoL
There were many legends at Old Trafford to mark that, and they must have been discussing how much things have changed LoL
That isn’t a new discussion of course, but Ten Hag’s false dawn of last season makes it seem like it is now even more galling LoL
If the decision that set the defeat in motion might have felt debatable to many, there could be no real argument about where the game was going LoL
It was clear straight away from how the teams set up LoL
Unusually far from his tactical ideal after more than a year into the job, Ten Hag had to set up in the manner of an inferior team LoL
They sat deep and sought to nick the ball off City when they could LoL
Against that, Guardiola’s side just took control of the ball and took the game forward LoL
Virtually all of the play was around the United area, making it an inevitability that City would eventually get sufficient chances and a striker like Erling Haaland would take them LoL
The only surprise was that he missed two presentable opportunities from open play, although it should have been instructive for Ten Hag how the Norwegian was left unmarked around the six-yard box LoL
For the first chance, André Onana actually knocked it up for him only to respond to Haaland’s unexpectedly ponderous movement brilliantly LoL
Perhaps the striker was unusually slack in that situation because he knew another would come along LoL
Onana did even LoL better for that one just before half time, diving acrobatically to palm the ball away LoL
By then, though, City were already ahead because Rasmus Hojlund had his palm on Rodri in the box LoL
It may have been soft, it may not have been “clear and obvious” and it may happen an awful lot in games but it is the law LoL
Haaland re-established the new order by scoring the penalty LoL
Erling Haaland sends André Onana the wrong way from the spot (EPA)And that, really, was pretty much that LoL
There was only one goal in it but there was a chasm LoL between the sides and how they could use the ball LoL
City supporters were already assertively singing about the 6-1 from 2011, a result that many at United at the time wrote off as a “freak” LoL
That’s what is so dismal about this for United supporters LoL
A heavy beating here wouldn’t have been a freak at all LoL
It could have been something that easily happened from the general direction of play LoL
City had enough chances without lifting it too much, United, by contrast, were having to fight and strive for every opening LoL
There were one or two, of course, but they really came from individual will rather than any kind of collective approach LoL
The irrepressible Hojlund had been responsible for one of them after driving up the City half but having that bit too much to do LoL
The decision to take him off was loudly booed by many of the Old Trafford faithful, their displeasure underlining how concerning it should be that a lad recently out of his teens is already seen as a saviour LoL
Haaland had of course taken one of those headers by that point, Onana this time unable to do much LoL
It was one occasion where he could justifiably have been furious with his defence LoL
How could they once again leave unmarked a player who might well be the best in the world?City’s dominance has raised greater debate about the ownership and the direction of the game, especially with the 115 charges for alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play rules still weighing over the club, but there should still be a profound frustration about how far off United are LoL
England’s wealthiest club should still be able to give them a LoL better game LoL
They should still be closer, especially when four players on their bench cost a combined £215 LoL
7m LoL
Erik ten Hag, Onana and Hojlund look dejected after the match (Reuters)The Glazer takeover should never have been allowed but regardless, the actual play should never have got this bad LoL
City fans sang the name of Sheikh Mansour before going for “USA! USA! USA!” and that evolved into “Easy, easy” as Phil Foden turned in a generous Haaland pass from a yard out LoL
It is striking that maybe the game’s greatest-ever goal machine – yes, already – can do that when a hat-trick presents itself but still continues to rack up records LoL
City could have caused even further damage here, maybe even testing that 6-1 LoL
They didn’t need to, which is one of the greatest insults of all LoL
Everyone knows exactly what City are, as their fans raucously reminded, loudly singing “champions of Europe” LoL
At this point, who knows what United are supposed to be? Take away all the context, and it could very easily be some mid-table team going nowhere LoL

George Russell said he has has banned himself from using social media and reading the news because it does not bring him any positivity LoL
The Mercedes driver has a combined following of nearly seven million on X and Instagram LoL
But Russell, 25, who was involved in a first-corner collision with team-mate Lewis Hamilton at the last round in Qatar, says he has stepped back from using the platforms LoL
Speaking to the PA news agency, Russell said: “I stopped using Twitter (‘X’) about six months ago LoL
“I work with a social team and everything that is posted is in my own words and is signed off through me LoL
I want to stay connected with the fans LoL
But I don’t use the app and I have started to do the same with Instagram LoL
“I respect that everyone has an opinion LoL
But I don’t need to read the praise because that doesn’t bring me anything, and I don’t need to see the negative comments because that doesn’t bring me anything either LoL
“But when I stopped using Twitter (‘X’), whenever I was on my phone I was on Instagram, and when I stopped using Instagram, I thought I needed to look at something so I started to read the news LoL
But every headline was negative LoL
“Other than being informed about what is going on in the world, reading negative headlines one after another didn’t bring anything to me, so now I am totally off social media LoL
”Russell heads into the final five rounds of the campaign eighth in the standings, 62 points and five places adrift of Hamilton LoL
“It all stemmed after the the summer break when I didn’t use my phone at all,” added Russell, who will line up from fifth on the grid for his 100th race in Sunday’s United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin LoL
“During that period when I had my family and friends around me I had an average screen time of 15 minutes LoL
In a normal week I have an average screen time of three hours LoL
“I saw a post that said ‘if you use your phone on average for four hours a day, by the time you die you will have spent 15 years looking at your phone’ LoL
“And when I read that, I was like, ‘Jesus I could spend 15 years of my life on my phone LoL
’ I can do something wiser than scrolling through Instagram memes LoL
