Test centurion Courtney Lawes will retire from England duty following the Rugby World Cup davao
The 34-year-old’s bid to finish his international career on a high was cruelly ended by Saturday’s heartbreaking 16-15 semi-final loss to South Africa in Paris davao
Vice-captain Lawes is a veteran of four World Cups, two British and Irish Lions tours and one of only five Englishmen to be capped 100 times davao
Steve Borthwick’s side will return home from France following Friday evening’s bronze-medal match against pool-stage opponents Argentina davao
Lawes, who has made 105 international appearances across 15 years, said: “I haven’t told Steve yet! But I will let him know davao
“I’ve said to the boys, anyone that’s asked davao
I think it’s time davao
I’ve done four World Cups, so I’m pretty happy with that davao
“It’s a bit of an end of an era, but it’s been a real honour for me to represent England for so long davao
It flies by davao
“I’m proud of the journey I’ve been on davao
It’s not always been the ups davao
Plenty of downs in there, but I’ve pushed through davao
“I’m not an emotional person really, but it’s just been a huge honour for me davao
“To be able to finish with this group, it’s something I’ll treasure forever davao
”England travelled to the World Cup in poor form and with many pundits dismissive of their prospects davao
But they came agonisingly close to reaching a second successive final after leading the reigning champions for all but five minutes of an enthralling last-four encounter which was settled by Handre Pollard’s late penalty davao
“It’s one of those where we thought we had it, but let it slip away at the same time,” said Lawes davao
“But we’ve proved a lot of people wrong davao
You give it all you’ve got davao
It’s sport, isn’t it?“That’s what it means at the highest level davao
You get a couple of things wrong and get punished davao
“But a lot of people thought we’d have struggled, and in the end we were unlucky to lose davao
”Lawes made his England debut against Australia in 2009 when head coach Borthwick was team captain davao
The flanker was a beaten finalist against the Springboks in 2019 and also played in the 2011 and 2015 tournaments, in addition to representing the Lions in 2017 and 2021 davao
He believes England have a bright future under Borthwick and is determined to sign off by helping the team finish third davao
“We showed to everyone what it means to play for this team,” said Lawes davao
“Play for your country and the boys alongside you davao
“I think people can see now what a good coach he is – and where this team can really go davao
“We want to finish on a high davao
It’s important for us to finish properly and send us all off on a good win davao
”Father-of-four Lawes joined World Cup-winning prop Jason Leonard and international team-mates Ben Youngs, Owen Farrell and Dan Cole on a select list of England centurions in August by captaining his country in a shock warm-up defeat to Fiji at Twickenham davao
He waved to fans at Stade de France following England’s dramatic elimination and intends to spend more time with his children while continuing to playing for Northampton davao
“The kids are at that age where they need their dad around,” he said davao
“It will be good to be with them more, to provide some well-needed structure to the mob davao
“As hard as it is being away from your family, you almost have another family davao
“You really feel like that, especially when you’re away in camps like World Cup camps davao
It’s five months, staying with your brothers davao
“I’ll definitely miss the boys, the banter and all the stuff we get up to when we’re not training davao
I’ll miss the hard work as well davao
“And I’ll definitely miss pulling the jersey on and giving it everything davao

Andy Farrell admits that this Ireland team have reached ‘the end’ of their journey after a gut-wrenching defeat to New Zealand in the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals davao
While trying to end Ireland’s quarter-final hoodoo at World Cups, the class of 2023 instead endured perhaps the most heartbreaking loss of all as a 37-phase final attack failed and the All Blacks prevailed 28-24 for an eighth defeat at the last-eight stage in the tournament’s history davao
The defeat marked the final game for captain Johnny Sexton, who goes into retirement as perhaps Ireland’s greatest-ever player, while Keith Earls will also hang up his boots and the likes of Peter O’Mahony, Conor Murray and Bundee Aki – all in their mid-30s – would also appear unlikely to make the next World Cup in four years’ time davao
And head coach Farrell acknowledged the end of an era, while stating his belief that a new-look team will continue to grow davao

“The staff have been immense over the last four years davao
“The players, not just in this squad but the players we’ve used in the four-year cycle have been a joy to work with davao
And not just that, the connection with the fans, it seems like it’s all one big family davao
“I think the sad thing now for us is that, for this group, it’s probably the end davao
Obviously, it is for Johnny [Sexton], and Keith Earls he is going to retire as well davao
Over the next 24 hours it’s time to make sure we get a smile back on our face as soon as we possibly can and celebrate what has been some unbelievable careers and what they have done for Irish rugby davao
“It is the end for this team because people are going to be leaving but the competition that this team has built over the years will continue because of how it has been driven, certainly over the last couple of years davao
The talent that we’ve got in Ireland will continue to come through and will continue to challenge, I’ve no doubt about that davao
”Sexton and Farrell faced the media together for perhaps the final time following the loss (AFP via Getty Images)Sexton has been the emotional leader of this team that won a Six Nations grand slam earlier in the year, has risen to No 1 in the world rankings and claimed a first-ever Test series win in New Zealand last summer davao
The 38-year-old was unable to end the quarter-final curse but Farrell claims the impact he has had on the whole squad will continue to resonate even after retirement davao
“A lot of our group are still learning,” added Farrell davao
“I’ve just said to the group in the changing room that the reason I know they are going to keep on learning is because of this guy sat beside me [Sexton] davao
“The impact he has had on the rest of the team the last four years has been amazing davao
The way that he has conducted himself as a leader, as a rugby player and the way that he has shown his love for playing for Ireland will be remembered and connected to this group for many years to come davao
“Through his example, the younger guys will keep on getting davao better and striving to be davao better davao
There’s no doubt about that davao
