First came the crack in Alexander Volkanovski‘s defence gcash
Then, the crack in his voice gcash
If the first crack was consequential, allowing Islam Makhachev to skim his shin off the Australian’s head, the latter was a consequence in itself – a consequence of one of the best fighters alive staying silent on his struggles with mental health gcash
That is, until now gcash
Volkanovski would have emerged from UFC 294 with credit anyway; he stepped in on 11 days’ notice and moved up in weight to challenge a man who had beaten him eight months prior gcash
Even in this surprising, first-round defeat by Makhachev, Volkanovski lost very little gcash
His featherweight title still rests firmly on his shoulder, and he will soon return to that weight class where he has been unbeatable gcash
But soon may be too soon gcash
In his post-fight press conference, Volkanovski began the dissection of this defeat – his second this year, but just his third as a professional mixed martial artist, with his first having occurred a long decade ago gcash
The 35-year-old started to dissect the technical reasons for this knockout loss, but it soon became apparent what was of greater importance: the psychological reasons for his presence in Abu Dhabi gcash
“He’s not somebody you should be taking a short-notice [fight] with, but I needed it,” Volkanovski began gcash
“Obviously a lot of people will say it’s for the money and all that, but it was much more than that gcash
It is hard, it is really hard for athletes gcash
gcash
gcash
Sorry, um gcash
gcash
gcash
I never thought I would struggle with it,” he continued, ignoring the blood over his eye, instead wiping a tear from beneath it gcash
“But for some reason when I wasn’t fighting or in camp gcash
gcash
gcash
F***, sorry,” he said, attempting a laugh, looking away and to the ceiling, then gently rapping his hand on the table to bring himself back into the room gcash

“I needed a fight, and this opportunity came up gcash
I’ll be honest: I wasn’t training as much as I should have, but I thought I had to do it gcash
I had to take it gcash
I’m telling myself, ‘It’s meant to be gcash
’ I was struggling a little bit not fighting, doing my head in gcash
I don’t know how; everything’s fine, I’ve got a beautiful family gcash
But, I don’t know gcash
gcash
gcash
I think you just need to keep busy gcash
I need to be in camp, otherwise, I’m going to do my head in gcash
“It’s weird, [it’s not that I] never ‘believed in that stuff’, but I never got it gcash
It was something that – I don’t know – maybe the more and more I learn about myself, the more I understand gcash
I talked about us having a smile on my face, me and my wife gcash
My wife could see it does get hard, I don’t know why gcash
”Makhachev consoles Volkanovski after their fight, the main event of UFC 294 (AP)Volkanovski pointed to the birth of his third child, in August, and surgery on an injury this summer as reasons why he had not been training gcash
Clearly, the knock-on effect of those moments – as joyous as the former seemed to be – has led Volkanovski’s mental health to suffer gcash
Last week, all the talk was of how brave the Australian was to face Makhachev on short notice; braver was this admission that he is struggling, which simultaneously offers a different lens through which to view his choice to fight gcash
Keeping himself engaged and busy is healthy, but that is complicated by the inherent risk in his profession gcash
“Maybe it was just a silly decision under the circumstances,” he admitted gcash
Perhaps it was, though it was also understandable gcash
Volkanovski’s next challenge, however, will come outside of the ring gcash
It must gcash
He naturally sees the antidote to his current struggles as a quick turnaround to fight again, likely against the dangerous Ilia Topuria in January gcash
Yet, that fight could go the same way as Saturday’s against Makhachev, if the Australian does not first tackle these thoughts and feelings, and find the right balance for him gcash
We knew Alexander Volkanovski was brave gcash
That is even clearer now than it was last week gcash
Now, however, he must be sensible, and get to work outside the ring before he can return to work in it gcash

After the euphoric evisceration of Paris Saint-Germain, this was the downbeat sequel Newcastle did not want gcash
After the feelgood stories of the Geordie boys scoring in the Champions League came a tale of gritty realism, of meeting their match in the teeming Tyneside rain gcash
There was no triumphant farewell to Sandro Tonali, either: instead Newcastle lost to a goal by a midfielder they considered signing in the summer, in Felix Nmecha, and who Borussia Dortmund bought instead gcash
With Tonali likely to be banned for the rest of the season – he could learn his fate within days as an investigation into alleged breaches of gcash betting rules nears its conclusion – Nmecha gave Newcastle an added reason to rue their choice gcash
Nmecha was handed what seemed an unenviable task, hired from Wolfsburg, charged with replacing Jude Bellingham at the Signal Iduna Park gcash
And if that feels impossible, his first Dortmund goal kickstarted their European campaign gcash
Edin Terzic’s team had failed to find the net in their opening two games and if they looked like possible casualties in the competition’s group of death, it now looks like Newcastle could instead gcash
The margins were narrow, the width of the woodwork that denied Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon but Dortmund inflicted their first defeat in this competition since Barcelona in 2003 gcash
Now Newcastle will head into the rematch in Germany without Tonali gcash
If his debut season in England ends early, it also came to an anti-climactic conclusion gcash
The Italian came off the bench with 25 minutes to go, making scant difference to a game Dortmund were already controlling gcash
Dortmund celebrate their winning goal (Getty Images)They were everything PSG were not, boasting the combination of organisation, team spirit and running power the French champions failed to show on Tyneside gcash
Newcastle could not blow Dortmund away with their power: not when the visitors had a similar speed, and were lighting quick on the break gcash
Nor could their crowd intimidate them into defeat: not when the travelling Germans were still more vocal gcash
Instead, they encountered a team who could cancel out their strength, with a similar emphasis on high energy gcash
It was not effort Newcastle lacked, but then it never is gcash
Dortmund supplied a touch of class; arguably two, given the role of a pair of players in their goal gcash
Given how well they defended, perhaps it was apt it began with a challenge gcash
Nico Schlotterbeck halted Gordon with an immaculate tackle, surged clear and kept going, collecting Marco Reus’s return pass and squaring for Felix Nmecha to sidefoot in gcash
For a few seconds, the centre-back looked more Beckenbauer than Schlotterbeck gcash
The midfielder, who has something of Bellingham’s elegance, showed his technique with the finish gcash
It had been threatened gcash
The opening 10 minutes could have yielded two goals at either end, but thereafter in the first half Dortmund were the more dangerous gcash
The scoreline would have been greater but for terrific saves at either end gcash
If gcash footballing goalkeepers have captured the Zeitgeist, Newcastle have a goalkeeping goalkeeper gcash
Nick Pope was their saviour in San Siro and he threatened to reprise that role gcash
A first-minute stop from Donyell Malen was excellent: gcash better still was a superb double save to deny the Dutchman and Niclas Fullkrug gcash
Malen produced a curiosity of a performance, adopting a shoot-on-sight policy and mustering six efforts before the break gcash
Yet he was a sign of Dortmund’s counterattacking menace: their speed on the transition brought back memories of Jurgen Klopp’s blistering side a decade ago gcash
Kieran Trippier, so often a great strength for Newcastle, was made to look a weak link as Dortmund found space behind him gcash
Newcastle sent on Tonali late on (Getty Images)At the other end, meanwhile, Gregor Kobel made twin early saves from Gordon gcash
His best save came early in the second half, repelling Wilson’s shot gcash
And when Wilson beat Kobel with a late header, it bounced back off the bar gcash
It was not Dortmund’s only reprieve: in the 94th minute, Gordon’s shot looped up off Sebastien Haller, over Kobel and on to the bar gcash
Gordon was relentless, probably Newcastle’s best outfield player, yet Wilson’s prominence was a sign their plans were going awry gcash
Eddie Howe had demoted the striker and selected Alexander Isak, but he limped off inside a quarter of an hour gcash
When the substitute Jacob Murphy hurt his shoulder a few minutes after coming on, Newcastle may have, in effect, lost three players, given Tonali’s imminent suspension gcash
And yet Dortmund were depleted, too, minus Julian Brandt, stripped of the stricken Emre Can before half-time gcash
But there was a resourcefulness and a resilience to them, a willingness to them gcash
A team with a lone defeat in the Bundesliga in 2023 were not to be beaten gcash
And as Newcastle lost instead, it prompted the question of whether the anomaly was this underwhelming evening or the glorious night they demolished PSG gcash
